What is Mumble?

CAVI host a Mumble server for students and staff to communicate easily with one another. Whilst there are other options available CAVI have selected an opensource and non restricted server model that employs the Opus codec. This will allow us to communicate and record our sessions with high quality codecs.

Linux/BSD

For Debian/Ubuntu users use the command packages are available in standard repositories or you can on Ubuntu use the PPA for updated versions.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mumble/release
sudo apt-get install mumble

Mac OS

Mac OS users, Apple introduced a stricter verification and warning process. Mac OS will now warn you when installing the Mumble application. This is expected and not a security issue.

How do I connect?

Our server information using the Mumble standard port is cucat.org.

Open the Mumble Client Software package.
Choose connect from the menu.
TAB to server name, then domain name and fill out the below details.

the standard port for Mumble is used, for reference the port is 64738.
Now the server is added you are able to connect.

Before connecting run the Audio wizard for the first time. Press ALT + O, arrow down to Audio Wizard, and press enter. The first screen of the audio wizard tells you that your micropone will be heard during the wizard as a loopback device. The second screen asks you for your input devices and most importantly echo cancellation to limit feedback from your speakers. The last two checkboxes on this screen ask for positional audio and if Mumble should lower the volume of your other sound streams such as your screen reader, leave this atenuate checkbox unchecked. Normally, for most of the screens, you can press enter on the Next button. The exception is when setting up push to talk which is about the 5th setup screen in the wizard. We recommend that students use the Push To Talk method, also known as PTT. This means that unless you are holding the buttons you configure on your keyboard you will not transmit. CAVI recommends using the left Shift, Left Control keys combination to avoid any conflicts with commonly used shortcuts. In the Audio Wizard, when presented with the Transmission screen, select the Push to Talk radio button, then tab until you hear "Press shortcut". At this point, press Control+Shift once, then tab to the next button and press enter. Now the two keys you pushed together, hopefully left shift and left control become your push to talk buttons. Whilst they are held together you are transmitting. Note: For anyone with dexterity problems instructors can be contacted prior classes commencing for alternative options. You can then complete the audio wizard by just pressing the Next button and finally the Finish button.

Mobile Phone usage

Though Mumble is available on IOS and via 3rd party apps on Android, CAVI prefer students to use a dedicated computer where they are stationary in a quiet environment. Please see our reasons against mobile dvices.

House Keeping

Please note that a headset with a microphone is required. Using computer speakers means the channel could echo extra noise from screen reader speech. Too much background or speech could result in your talking abilities being removed.
