Uploading Files to a Webspace using WinSCP

Kerry has recorded an audio demo of how to upload files using WinSCP. Click here to listen. If you want to download the file just right click the link that says "click here to listen" and choose save. For the text instructions continue reading.

Filezilla is a great resource, but if you are already familiar with the application WinSCP, there is a painless way to configure it to allow upload to your webspace. Best of all, it provides an option to upload files simply by right-clicking them (using the Applications key on a Windows keyboard). Here's how.

  1. Run WinSCP.
  2. You'll likely be placed in an edit field which reads Session Host Name. Before entering this information, shift tab three times and ensure the following.
    1. The Session section of the tree view is expanded.
    2. Advanced Options is unchecked.
    3. The Session Protocol is set to SFTP.
  3. Having ensured all the above, enter the following:
    1. Session Host Name: htmlclass.cavitraining.com
    2. Port Number (read simply as Session with the JAWS PC cursor): 22
    3. Session Username: your username to access your webspace.
    4. Session Password: the password you created in Assignment 1.
    5. The next field (simply labelled session using the JAWS PC cursor) is for the complete URL of your webspace.
  4. Activate the Save button by tabbing along to it or pressing alt+s. In the Edit field that appears, type in the name by which you'd like to refer to this session in future.
  5. It might be wise to leave the Remember Password field unchecked, as recommended by the application itself.
  6. Activate the Login button. You may be presented with a dialog saying your directory doesn't exist or doesn't have a private key in a known format. An instructor may wish to verify this, but I think it's safe to bypass this message with the Ignore button.
  7. Enter your password, click the OK button, and you're in your directory including your public_html and other default folders.
  8. Now, from within Windows Explorer or wherever your files are stored, the "Send To" submenu will contain an option that says WinSCP (for Upload). This will upload the file into your public_html folder. From within WinSCP (or Filezilla), you can easily move this file to other locations on your webspace.
