An Introduction to PHP: Semester 1 2016

Hello! And welcome to the written lecture notes for the introduction to PHP course. These notes complement the audio material by providing us all with an outline of what we are going to cover during each lecture.

During lectures, questions are of course welcome at any time. Sometimes, the answer to a question will be 'that's coming later', which means that your question was anticipated and is part of the course structure. At other times, you'll receive an answer, possibly with a follow-up message on the PHP mailing list after the lecture with more information or detail. We've decided to take this approach so that we don't stray off topic too often, as the course is planned and structured to fit into the time you've paid for, and it's only fair that everyone gets a chance to participate in the course in full.

Each of the written note documents contains *

  • an outline of what's going into each lecture,
  • and links to, or attachments of, any assignments you have to complete.

Think of these as the agenda of a business meeting with a few added extras, inasmuch as they contain a plan to follow, as well as further material (like homework assignments).

The first lecture contains a lot of theory and introductory material, but it is important so that we're all on the same page.

Notes for each lecture of this course

Each lecture has a code for filing on the Wiki, composed of the year, semester, and lecture. Click on the codes in the table below to be taken to the notes for that lecture. For example, the code for lecture 1 of this course is 2014s01l01, which means the first lecture of the first semester of 2014. You won't need to use these codes yourself, but I wanted to explain what the numbers and letters in the below table mean.
