Creating and Sending Zip Files Via Dropbox

Introduction

For certain CAVI courses you will need to submit zip files to instructors in order to complete assignments. Here is a quick guide to show you how to do it, which assumes that you already have Dropbox installed and that you are reasonably familiar with folder browsing and file management.

Step by Step

  1. if one does not already exist, create a folder for your files, and make sure everything you need to send is in it.
  2. Back out of the folder, highlight it and either press shift f10, applications key or right click the folder.
  3. Press n, which will open the "send to" submenu.
  4. The first item in that submenu and therefore the one that has focus by default is "Compressed zip folder". Pressing enter on this will package up the folder's contents into a zip file, preserving the structure of any subfolders that may be within.

This zip file can be found in the folder above the one you just zipped up in the directory structure and will have the same name as the folder itself.

  1. move the zip file to anywhere in Dropbox.
  2. Right click it/press shift f10/applications key to bring up the same context menu and press l, which should automatically activate the "Share Dropbox Link" option. A link to the file will automatically be copied to your clipboard.
  3. Paste this into an email and send to the intended recipient.

Final thought

If you only need to send a single file such as a wav or video file, the "Share Dropbox Link" option will work just as well.
